The Galmpton Galleon

Emerging from a hillside above the Dart estuary in South Devon this ship is all ready to set sail. Built on a holiday park where the play area is located on a slope it seemed far better to use the slope than try and create a flattened area. The ship can be boarded at ground level at the stern yet the prow is 2 metres above ground level. This change in height relative to the structure means that we could create exciting inside areas, tunnels and scramble nets, and have 3 different deck heights.

Overall the ship is about 6 metres in length and 2 metres wide, yet there is plenty of space for a full crew. Despite the custom nature of the project all aspects were designed and built to be in accordance with EN1176 and EN1177. This means that as the potential fall height increases towards the front of the vessel grow through ring matting was used to provide a robust safety surface, that nevertheless naturalises into its surroundings as the grass grows through and is mown over normally.
