CUSTOM BUILD CLIMBING FRAME AT THE CATHEDRAL SCHOOL IN EXETER

This project in Exeter, Devon clearly demonstrates Playways ability to work with the space and situation available and come up with something quite special. Space in the school playground at the school is extremely limited, with a marked out sports area for ball games occupying most of the open area.
In one corner though there was scope to build a long structure which, to incorporate all the desired features, would have to be a custom build. The central units is a combination of horizontal and vertical armoured core scramble nets. These not only allow great climbing and scrambling, they are also great for lounging and talking.
In order to enhance the social aspect of this part of the structure the central element has a large cedar shingled roof. Cedar shingles are a great way of naturalising a structure into its setting, and with the magnificent cathedral in the background it was vital that the play structure worked rally well with its location.
In addition to the netted area of the play frame, the section in the foreground of the features monkey bars and a double sided climbing wall.
At the far end of the climbing frame the bank rises up. With only a narrow space available it seemed the perfect spot for a long chain link clatter bridge.
Although its an unconventional design it looks perfectly at home in the historic setting of Exeter Cathedral in Devon. And just as importantly the whole structure has been a huge success with children of the Cathedral school.
Its worth pointing out that even though this is a very bespoke design, in a difficult space, the end result conforms to the safety requirements of BSEN1176 and BSEN1177, the playground equipment and surfacing standards.
