Hello. I’m Martin Killick and I’m the founder and Managing Director of Playways. For reasons explained below I’m taking part in the upcoming Hackney Half Marathon. I’ll be running in support of the charity Shelter. I’ve never done anything like this before, so I’m out for all the encouragement and support I can get. There’s a link to the giving page below.
Like a lot of people of a certain age, and after many years of showing little interest in sport or sporting activity, I’ve suddenly discovered running, and the enjoyment and satisfaction that can be achieved by doing this most primal of activities.
I am not a sportsman.
I live in East Devon, and have been running for about 2 years.
Aside of the obvious investment in longevity! I run because I enjoy it, and because it is wonderfully mentally relaxing. I know of nothing else that forces you to switch off from the daily pressures.
During a rash conversation at Christmas I put my hand up to join my brother in law James in the Hackney Half Marathon in May. Other than a couple of muddy Parkruns around the Killerton Estate in Devon I haven’t run in a group at all yet.
Most of my training is around the lanes of East Devon. Hills are an inevitable feature, I’m hoping that on the relatively flat ground of East London they’ll stand me in good stead.
I haven’t a clue what sort of time I’ll achieve, although i’m heading towards a 50min 10k in training. So, whilst just staying the course is the first objective. If I complete in under 2 hours that will be something.
I’ve chosen Shelter because It is a massively worthwhile organisation. I’m sure we all have an idea of what Shelter do, I found this quote on their website which seems to capture what this vital charity is about.
Shelter helps millions of people every year struggling with bad housing or homelessness through our advice, support and legal services. And we campaign to make sure that, one day, no one will have to turn to us for help.
We’re here so no one has to fight bad housing or homelessness on their own.
Thank you for this reading this. If wish to sponsor me your contribution will be helping a very good cause. And any support, whether monetary or just simple good wishes means a lot to me.
